The First Generation: Duke of Wellington, Chanel, and shuffling Gold
Having established the aim of reviving the English Golden Cuckoo Marans, the next question is straightforward: where does the project actually begin?
The answer lies not with Golden Cuckoos themselves, but with the birds that still carry the ingredients needed to recreate them.
One of the most important birds in the project is Chanel, a French-standard Blue Copper Marans hen from my very first hatch of Marans. She has become one of the foundation hens of the flock: a large, productive, long-lived bird with excellent Marans type and consistently dark eggs. Alongside Chanel, several carefully selected French Black Copper Marans hens contribute the rich egg colour and gold-based plumage that modern English Silver Cuckoo Marans lack.
One of Chanel’s daughters, Claudie, has inherited much of her quality and has become the darkest egg layer in the current flock. She represents exactly the sort of maternal line that deserves preserving, even while individual faults—such as the high tail inherited from her sire—are carefully selected against.
The foundation sire chosen to complement these hens was Duke of Wellington, my English Silver Cuckoo Marans cock. At first glance, a Dark Cuckoo may seem the more obvious choice. However, one of the key reasons for choosing a Silver Cuckoo lies in the genetics of plumage.
Both Silver Cuckoos and Black Copper Marans are based on the birchen (Eᴿ) allele. Although they look very different, they share the same underlying plumage pattern, with the Silver Cuckoo carrying the dominant sex-linked Silver (S) allele where the Black Copper carries the recessive gold (s⁺) allele. Crossing these two varieties therefore allows the project to exchange silver for gold while keeping the same underlying birchen pattern intact.
A traditional English Dark Cuckoo, by contrast, is typically based on extended black (E) rather than birchen. This pattern is dominant to birchen and hides and gold and silver that would otherwise show. That extra layer of complexity would make it considerably harder to recognise and select the birds needed to rebuild the English Golden Cuckoo.
The principal mating therefore became:
Duke of Wellington × Chanel
English Silver Cuckoo × French Blue Copper Marans
Additional matings paired Duke of Wellington with selected French Black Copper Marans hens.
Genetically, these matings are surprisingly elegant. Duke of Wellington contributes the dominant Silver (S) allele, while the copper hens contribute gold (s⁺). The resulting F1 cockerels are therefore expected to be S/s⁺: silver in appearance, yet carrying gold hidden beneath the surface. They also inherit the birchen background from both parents, meaning that the framework needed for the future Golden Cuckoo is already present in the very first generation.
This hidden inheritance is one of the reasons the F1 generation can appear deceptive. Many of these young cockerels simply resemble Silver Cuckoos. Genetically, however, they are carrying half of the material required to recreate a Golden Cuckoo in the following generation.
The hatch produced eleven surviving chicks, reared successfully beneath Silkie broodies. Among them were two blue cuckoo cockerels from Chanel, several silver cuckoo offspring from the Black Copper hens, and lavender silver birds from a separate lavender breeding project.
As the youngsters developed, each began to reveal different strengths. Some possessed remarkably clean legs, an essential feature of the English standard. Others developed heavier shank feathering inherited from their French ancestry. Some carried exceptionally clear barring, others broader bodies, better tail carriage, or superior overall type.
One cockerel, Blue Band, emerged with outstanding body shape and remarkably crisp barring, although he also inherited the heaviest leg feathering. Another, Brown Band, initially appeared promising for his size but later developed a noticeably longer, higher tail and gradually lost his advantage in body mass (this boy will therefore not be used for breeding). Chanel’s two sons also diverged, but neither disappointed. Purple Band retained excellent mass and type, plus a lower tail, while his darker blue brother, Nelson, remained clean-legged, making him particularly valuable as a potential route back towards the clean-legged English standard.
Perhaps the most encouraging outcome has been the performance of Claudie’s daughters. As hens only inherit gold/silver and barring/not barred alleles from their sire, all pullets are silver cuckoos like Wellington. Assuming the chick identifications remain correct, they combine one of the strongest dark egg lines in the flock with excellent body shape, giving future generations the opportunity to preserve these maternal qualities while correcting inherited faults through carefully selected cockerels. While it may seem counterintuitive to produce pullets that are the same variety as Wellington, they do not have any impact on the barring or gold status of their female offspring. This means they can be used solely for type and egg selection, while the future sire handles the sex-linked genes desired for F2 pullets.
This is the stage where breed restoration stops being theoretical genetics and becomes selective breeding. No single bird possesses every characteristic required. Instead, each contributes one or two pieces of the puzzle.
The task now is to assemble those pieces patiently.
The first generation was never expected to produce finished English Golden Cuckoo Marans.
Its purpose was something far more important.
It produced the genetic foundation from which they can eventually emerge.
